What do fountains, skyscrapers, and dune bashing have in common? Let me give you a clue: Desert city determined to produce “bigger-and-better-than-any-other-place-on-earth” experiences for every local, every tourist, every worker. If you guessed Dubai, you win the prize!
A few months ago I learned of an opportunity to travel to Dubai as a volunteer helper for a global women’s retreat-conference. Sensing this open door to come alongside younger gals who were experiencing many of the challenges I had faced when living overseas myself, I applied, prayed, and got accepted to join the team.
For almost a week our team trained, organized, listened, learned, taught, shared, and pampered our diverse group of ladies from all over the region. We laughed, we cried, we prayed. We reviewed timeless truths of hope in the source of our strength. We came away with new bonds of friendship and greater appreciation for servant-hearted sisters.
p.s. Oh, yes, we enjoyed seeing the fountains, skyscrapers, and the dunes…as well as taking in the sounds and smells of a city blending ancient civilization with ultra-contemporary adventures. If you happen to stop through Dubai yourself, you really should try the dune-bashing ride with the local landrover drivers: definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience! ~ Jo Beth
